On Saturday, May 7th, I visited Ord, Nebraska to attend the Teammates Tea. Mentors, along with their girls and the girls' mothers came together to get manicures and get their make up done. We had a nice dinner and then it was time for me to speak.

I spoke to the group about life, hope and possibilities. I reached out to the girls about dreaming big and creating BHAGS: big hairy audacious goals. I shared my life story and answered lots of questions about the Miss USA pageant, life as Miss Nebraska and the importance of education. I had such a good time being able to have an intimate setting where I could share my views and strive to inspire the Teammates group. After the speech I took pictures with the girls and signed autographs for each of them.

The Teammates Mentoring Program was founded by University of Nerbaska- Lincoln Head Football Coach Tom Osborne and his wife Nancy. There are over 4,000 matches across Nebraska, Iowa and California. I hope everyone, no matter your age, continues to set goals and go after your dreams! It was such an honor to be asked to speak to this amazing group of women.

Stepping up to the plate

May 1, 2011 I attended the Storm Chasers baseball game in Omaha in honor of the Nebraska Family Support Network. Over 175 people, consisting of children and families boarded buses at the Nebraska Family Support Network office and came to the ballgame. I threw out the first pitch of the game to kick off Children's Mental Health Awareness Month for NFSN.

After throwing out the fist pitch, I was thrilled to be welcomed by smiles and hugs from the Nebraska Family Support Network crew. I autographed pictures and baseballs for the kids and their parents. This event completely made my day, everyone was so kind and excited. It was a great day spent with amazing people.

May is National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Month. According to the Surgeon General “the MECA Study (Methodology for Epidemiology of Mental Disorders in Children and Adolescents) estimated that almost 21 percent of U. S. Children ages 9 -17 have a diagnosable mental or addictive disorder.” While bad temper tantrums and the occasional bad mood are normal for developing healthy emotions, when actions or behaviors begin to seem questionable or at times even frightening many Douglas and Sarpy County families need to find resources to help cope. Nebraska Family Support Network is a non-profit organization focused on helping families find resources and improving knowledge about mental health awareness among Douglas and Sarpy County residents.

I chose to wear green during the event. The color green signifies ones awareness to the needs of children and youth with behavioral, social or mental health disabilities. Green is the chosen color because during the 1800’s the color green was used to label a person with mental health disabilities as “insane”. In order to use green as a more positive message the mental health community has chosen to use green to symbolize new life, new health, and new beginning. Much in the way that a revived plant in the spring turns green with its new life, green can symbolize the change proper resources and correct treatment have in reviving the life of a child with mental health disabilities.

Life As of Lately...

Wow! It’s been a long time since I’ve blogged. I’ve received a few emails from people wondering what I’ve been up to so I apologize for my absence. I really appreciate the emails and from here on out will do better at updating my blog.

Well, life has slowed down for me, and for now I am really enjoying it. I have been fully focused on graduate school and preparing myself for the work force once I graduate next May. I am happy to say that my hard work in school and long hours of studying have been paying off. I’m on the path of receiving a 4.0 in my full course load of graduate classes! I’ve given tons of presentations this year, and I thank my training in pageants for the success and comfort of public speaking I now have. Only a month and a half stands between me and summer break. Although, I don’t know if it will be a break, since I will be taking classes, but the nice weather will be nice for a change!

I have been busy applying for fashion, advertising and public relations internships for the summer in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. I really have my heart set on Chicago and Los Angeles and have had a few offers, so within the next few months I will know for sure where I will be relocating this summer and working. There are so many great companies I’ve been in contact with and I look forward to working with them in the summer months. Relocating this summer will also give me a chance to see where I’d like to move after graduation. Although I love Nebraska and the people in it, the one downfall is that Nebraska is not the place for me to be to work in the industry I love.

Besides school and the intern hunt, I’ve had ample time to do my long list of hobbies. Sometimes I think I’m an old soul because I love doing all of the things my grandma and mom taught me when I was young. I’ve been a quilting maniac, sewing for hours upon end. I’ve been scrap booking out of control and also cooking a lot. I’ve been spending a lot of time with my little puppy Harley, my family, friends and boyfriend and have been able to continue living a healthy lifestyle. So although life has slowed down a little, I can’t complain. I’m taking advantage of the free time I have because life is about to pick back up to the busy schedules I adore so much.

I’ve been spending a lot of time with my Miss Nebraska USA girls. Haley Harold is preparing for Miss USA, and I couldn’t be more excited for her! She is one amazing women and I can’t wait to watch her in Vegas this June as Miss USA celebrates their 60^th Anniversary. Be sure to check out the contestants, and rate Haley 5 stars at missusa.com. I have some motivational speaking events coming up, so I look forward to sharing my experiences and helping others. I also have some very special little ones that will be entering my life. My brother and sister-in-law and my best friend and her husband are expecting in June and September! I am beyond excited for them!

Graduation!!

Journalism friends.

It's hard to believe how fast the last 4 and a half years flew by. Before I knew it I was ordering my cap and gown and finishing up my last semester of undergrad. I remember so clearly preparing to move from Scotia to Lincoln to start my college career. It was a huge step but I felt at home at UNL right away.

UNL did not want me to leave without a bang, they made me work extremely hard my last semester! But that made graduation day that much more special. It reminded me of how hard I had worked throughout the four and a years to receive my bachelors degree. School has never came easy for me, I've always had to study hard and put in extra hours to ensure a good grade.

Graduation day was wonderful. My entire family came, along with one of my best friends Geneice Wilcher and my boyfriend and his mom. I was even able to spot them out of the enormous crowd that filled the Bob Devaney Center in Lincoln. I was lucky enough to have a great number of my friends graduating at the same time as me. This made the day even more special.

Graduation didn't last quite as long as I was expecting. Since UNL is an extremely large school, graduation has the reputation to last quite a long time. But it was done in about an hour and a half. I graduated with the college of education and human sciences. But as a textile and clothing design & journalism and mass communications major with an emphasis on advertising, I have a very close link to the journalism college that I will be joining full force to get my masters degree.

Speaking of getting my masters degree; I couldn't exactly relate with a majority of my classmates because I'm not done with school or the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. I start right away in the spring semester in January. I'll be a full time student for the next year and a half completing my masters degree. I'll be studying Marketing, Communication and Advertising to receive my MCA. I've thoroughly enjoyed studying journalism and advertising, but am excited to further explore marketing and communications studies. I'll continue to work at our school newspaper, the Daily Nebraskan, and focus on successfully finishing my large load of school work.

After graduation we headed out to eat at my favorite restaurant in Lincoln: Sho Gun! Sushi and yummy food prepared right in fun of us with my family made for a fun time! Thanks to my mom for taking us all out to eat!

Tis The Season

It's my favorite time of year! Minus the snow that is! I love the cheer in the air, the giving all around and the gathering of families. I love the hot chocolate and chai tea, the warm clothes with gloves and scarfs, and the racing inside from the cold weather. Another love is decorating for Christmas. This year I got my very own Christmas tree! I thoroughly enjoyed decorating it with browns and golds. There's something about having a Christmas tree all lit up that just puts you in an automatic good mood! The one thing I can't say I absolutly love about this time of year is finals week.

Although graduation is approaching in a couple weeks, December 18th to be exact, finals weeks has kept me busy with my nose stuck in a book at the library. I enjoy school, but can't say I enjoy the late nights of studying, stressing and preparing that the end of a semester brings. I'm a huge organizer so I've never had to pull all-nighters. But this year there was no getting around it. Five hour energies became my best friend. And I must say, they do work! I had to put them to the test a lot last week.

We had a huge presentation for my capstone advertising campaigns class and this required late nights rehearsing. And when I say late, I mean late. We rehearsed until 1:30AM Wednesday night. This was a huge presentation because we presented in front of UNL faculty and the actual client that we were pitching our campaign to. Luckily our hard work paid off and we ended up winning over the client! This was a huge accomplishment. It was a whole semester packed with work, but the group I was working with made it a lot of fun.

I'd love to say the studying will end soon, but unfortunately it will not. I have one more week to go, and then in January I start graduate school. Other than school consuming my life, I had a great sushi date with Geneice Wilcher, Miss Nebraska 2007, and Haley Herold, Miss Nebraska 2011. Haley is on the road to success! She is so down to earth, and not to mention motivated! She has a great chance to do amazing things at Miss USA this year. I am so excited to help her in any way that I can and most of all to watch her compete! P.S. Her walk is fierce on stage! Miss USA class of 2011 better watch out!

By the way, have I mentioned how much my puppy Harley loves the bathtub!?! He has a slight obsession to say the least. He is in and out of the bathtub daily. Last week when I was taking a shower, he thought it would be a good idea to jump in with me! And what do you know? He's in the shower with me and I can't get him out. So, I finished up and he proceeded to hang out in there for awhile. I finally decided to fill the tub up with water and see if this would satisfy his needs. And it did, for an hour and a half in fact. He played in the tub like a little kid does with their toys. Complete craziness. I feel I have a dog with OCD, my mom suggested looking into a dog psychiatrist, I might have to do this! haha!

There will be much more to come, but I better hit the books!

Life After The Crown

It’s been close to a month since I’ve passed the crown to the new Miss Nebraska, and I must say it has been one crazy busy month! Graduation is approaching and I’ve not only been figuring out life after the crown, but also life after graduation!

On December 18^th I will be graduating from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln with a bachelors in Education and Human Sciences majoring in clothing and textile design/ journalism and mass communications with an emphasis on advertising. Interesting fun fact: I was informed that I have the longest major name on campus!

I’ve been pulled in many directions and picking a road to travel down has not been easy. I have a complex array of interests and aspirations. But I finally decided the best way to start, is by committing to my platform when I was Miss Nebraska and focus on the Importance of Education. Last week I was accepted into graduate school at UNL and will start this spring. This was great news, because I had spent long hours studying for the entrance exam (GRE) and had worked hard in my undergraduate career to have this opportunity. In graduate school I will be getting my masters in Marketing, Communications and Advertising, aka a MCA. Other than staying extremely busy with school, I have been getting maximum quality time with my friends and family. It's Husker season so I spend a lot of my Saturdays cheering on the Huskers in our last season in the Big 12. My sister and I took a trip to Chicago to check out possible careers. I was asked to come to Ford and Elite models. While there, I was told I was an inch too short for industry standards despite them loving my look and other measurements. This was a bit of a let down, but with failure comes opportunity. I decided it was a sign for me to veer my focus in another light. Since I am a clothing and textile design major I am eager to work behind the scenes or even pursue on camera work. We stayed in Chicago for 3 days and were able to look at a school with a masters program I was considering, looked at some businesses, and also enjoyed time on Michigan Avenue and Navy Pier! It was a great 3-day trip!

Lots of ideas have been running though my mind of things I would also like to pursue. I am in the works of starting an image consulting company and also would like to further explore photography. I love the West Coast and Chicago, so hopefully I will be in one of those areas in a year and a half. I am still actively involved in the community and look forward to inspiring others to "make a difference."

I still miss my dad every day, and I can't say I agree with the saying that "time heals all." With the holidays approaching, times will be tough. I cherish all of the time I get to spend with my family and love them dearly. On a brighter note, my brother and his wife are pregnant with their first baby! I'm so excited to be an aunt and pray for a healthy baby!

Miss Nebraska USA 2011

Well the day has come....my last hours as the reigning Miss Nebraska USA. Although the time flew faster than I ever imagined, I'm excited for one of these ladies to experience an amazing year. Amanda and I got to sleep in today, and that was something I haven't got to do in a long time! After we woke up we recorded our voice overs for our farewells speeches.

We didn't have to be at the theatre until 3PM for dress rehersal so I signed good luck autograph cards to all of the girls. Then it was time to back up, and let me tell you that was not easy. You wouldn't believe how many things I needed to back for just one weekend! But I managed to get everything packed up, got semi ready and headed to the theatre for dress rehearsal.

Fawnia and Joe did Amanda and I's hair and make up. That was a huge relief! A misconception about a beauty queen may be that we like to do our hair and make up. Well, sometimes I do. But to be completely honest I'm a mascara, powder and blush kind of girl. My grandma always did my hair when I was younger since she was a hairstylist for 40+ years, so I've never really enjoyed doing my hair. Don't get me wrong, I love to get fancied up, but 3 days in a row is pushing it! So needless to say, Fawnia and Joe saved the day!

Finals night went well, but so fast! Before I knew it my farewell speech was playing and it was time for me to take my final walk. This was tough. I was overwhelmed with emotions, I still can not believe my year as Miss Nebraska was coming to an end! I only dropped a few tears, it wasn't a complete bawl session, so I was proud of that.

Then it was time to give out awards and announce the runner ups and winner! Before I knew it I was crowning Haley Herald, the new Miss Nebraska USA 2011. It couldn't have gone to a more deserving woman. Haley rocked the stage and excuded pure beauty and confidence. She is beautiful inside and out and I'm glad to call her my friend. Her and I competed against eachother at Miss Nebraska USA 2009, my very first pageant. We have been friends ever since. It couldn't have been a better experience than passing the crown to someone who I know truly deserves it.

I'm so excited to now help Haley with her year. She will do fantastic as Miss Nebraska USA 2011. Joining her reign is Madison Novak, a complete doll who will also do a great job.

Well, I have officially been initiated into the HSBQ club. That stands for "Has Been Beauty Queen." And I can't say I'm sad. I'm ready for a new goal, a new dream and more new experiences. It was has been an amazing year and I'm excited to continue in a different direction. Don't think you're getting rid of me yet, I'll still be blogging about my "Life After the Crown," and I'll still be representing the "Small town girl with big city dreams." Keep a look out and I'll be sure to keep you updated.

Today started with Amanda and I filming our farewell video. We went to UNL campus and walked around while doing still life modeling. I must say, we had a good time! We definetly took some fun shots and had a good time! Later we'll do our voice over and the videographer will put together the farewell video and play it finals night at Miss Nebraska USA.

While we were shooting our video, the girls started rehearsal at 7AM at the Rococo theatre. They went over the opening number dance, evening gown walk and swimsuit walk and the schedule of how the evening would go.

Amanda and I arrived at the theatre at 1PM and ate lunch with the girls. This was a good time to encourage the girls and keep them excited about the weekend. After eating we went over the opening number dance and Amanda and I stepped in and did our parts. Luckily we really lucked out this year and didn't have a difficult dance. Although I love dancing, it was nice to be able to only learn one 8 count!

After rehearsing our parts with the girls we watched dress rehearsal and took notes on what how the girls performed on stage. I got a chance to talk one on one with each contestant and give them feed back about what I've learned about stage presence this year. I remember past titleholders doing this and it was a huge help and kept me confident as prelims approached.

Next it was dinner time and time to get ready. I was so glad that my hair stylist Fawnia from Rumors Hair Studio in Lincoln was able to come do our hair. And Joe, from Columbus came to do our make up. Although I've got a lot of practice doing both my hair and makeup this year, it was a relief to have them help us get ready for the big show!

At 7PM sharp the preliminary show began with opening number, swimsuit and evening gown competition. The girls did a great job! At the end of the show I handed out the Miss Congeniality, Spirit Award, Miss Photogenic, and mentor award to the Miss Nebraska USA contestants. They did a fantastic job and the night was a complete success!

At the end of the night we had our meet and greet at the theater and I got to go mingle in the crowd and see my grandma and mom who traveled to watch the show. I also got to see some great friends. Then it was back to the hotel where Geneice and I pigged out on some pizza and talked all night! And before I knew it I was getting sleepy eyed and headed back to the hotel room to get one more night's rest as Miss Nebraska USA. Wow has this year flown by! I still can't believe it! I'm excited for the next girl to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity!

Miss NE Day 1

Well, it's hard to believe but the weekend has crept up on me and it's time to pass the torch. Miss Nebraska USA 2011 started today and marked T-3 days till I will officially be a "former." BUT, on a lighter note, it was great to meet all the contestants competeing for this weekend and we had a great first day!

18 Miss girls and 15 teen girls traveled to downtown Lincoln, NE to the Holiday Inn to compete this weekend for Miss Nebraska USA and Miss Nebraska Teen USA. We started the day with orientation. Then it was off for the fun stuff: pictures! We took a group swimsuit photo then the girls took registration and evening gown pictures that can be found at missnebraskausa.com.

After orientation it was back to our room for a little down time to rest and unpack. At 6PM we headed into the ball room for the banquet. We ate a great dinner then had some fun on the dance floor! And you may think this was the end to our night, but no, this weekend is jam packed!

Next it was off to rehearsals! Everyone changed into comfy clothes and we started learning the choreography for the opening number dance. Amanda and I only had to learn an 8 count and we were done! So we watched the girls practice then headed back up to our room to relax and get to bed early!

My Farewell

I can’t believe that this year has come and gone so fast, and the time has come for me to bid farewell. It seems it was just yesterday that I was standing on stage in complete awe that I had become the new Miss Nebraska USA. This past year has been such a blessing full of new memories, experiences and people I will treasure forever. Not to mention hours upon hours in the gym, boot camps, appointments, checking the news every night, fake eyelashes, 6-inch heels, rhinestones, traveling across the state, hair products galore and nerves flying through the ceiling. I will forever be grateful for the people who have supported me and had faith in my along the way.

First and foremost I want to thank God for leading and guiding me through this last year.

I could not have asked for a more supportive and loving family than the one I have. I love you all. To my father who was the most light hearted, encouraging and inspiring dad a girl could ask for; thank you for making such a huge positive impact on my life. You were right by my side while I competed at Miss USA and now I have you as my guardian angle forever. This year is dedicated to you and your amazing legacy you have left. I know you’re with our entire family.

Mom, I cannot imagine not having you there every step of the way. This year has brought us closer than ever. You are my backbone and believed in me no matter what. You are my role model and I hope one day I can be the woman you are every day. Thank you for teaching me the morals, responsibility, strength, respect and diversity that I cherish today and was able to put in full force this year.

To my family. I love you all! Thank you all for your tiredness love and support. Maceo, Amber, Angie, Sharrel and Regina it was amazing having you in Vegas. I heard we had the best signs from a number of people! Grandma and grandpa, you guys have came to every extracurricular activity since I was a little girl, having your full support in everything I’ve ever done has made me believe in myself and reach my dreams. I don’t think you guys realized it, but grandma, you doing my hair all the time, letting me put on shows and skits for you and letting me put makeup on grandpa when I was younger was a beauty queen in the making, even if none of us ever imagined that I would one day be Miss Nebraska USA.

To my hometown, Scotia, and all of the small towns across Nebraska. I can’t imagine this year without your outstanding support. I will continue to be the “small town girl with big dreams.” And to the entire state of Nebraska, thank you for your continued support and for letting me represent this great state. And to my supporters across the globe, thank you, you all made me feel like a true super star.

To the Miss Nebraska USA sponsors, I couldn’t have done this year without you all. You are who keep this pageant to the prestige that it has today and I thank you for contributing to the success of my reign. To Kim and the Kimberly Spa staff, thank you for making me apart of your family and giving my skin the glow with your magical touch! I can’t thank you enough; you guys know how to make me feel like true royalty. Daryl, I can’t begin to express my thanks to the positive outlook on life and confidence you taught me. You taught me life lessons I will always remember throughout every experience! Brian, thank you for getting me in the best shape of my life and teaching my how to live the healthiest lifestyle that I plan to do forever.

To Vanbros and Associates, where to start?! John, you were always there to encourage me and help me relax and enjoy the ride. Jason, Jen, Will thank you for making this an amazing year and for letting me become apart of this elite family. Will, you know how to work your magic behind a camera!

Amanda, This past year was created for us two. You will always be my little sister, even 10+ years down the road. I couldn’t imagine spending the year and bonding with anyone else but you. This year has been unforgettable with you right by my side whether it was our awkward appearance riding on the zamboni or whether it was cheering you on at Miss Teen USA, we have memories to last a lifetime.

To the Soltero family, Saul, Sharon and Savannah. Saul, thank you for everything, but especially for unlocking my car, you’re the best! Sharon, thank you for making me confident in interview and guiding me to do my very best at Miss USA, I’ll never forget our Oklahoma road trip! Savannah, you are the sweetest girl, you were always Little Miss Nebraska USA. To the Solteros, thank you for making me apart of your family.

Michael, thank you for being there every step of the way. You’ve always made me feel like Miss USA. I can’t imagine you liked hearing about clothes, make up and all the girlie things I did this year, but you always listened and helped. You’re the best, and I’m lucky to have you in my life.

Sara, thank you for being the true definition of a best friend. You were there 2 years ago as I competed for Miss Nebraska, last year when I won Miss Nebraska, and with your mom in Vegas cheering me on at Miss USA. I can’t express to you how much I cherish our friendship! And to the rest of my friends, thank you for always being there when I needed you the most.

Geneice and Micaela, I am honored to have followed in your legacies and to be able to be apart of this sisterhood. You have made this year unforgettable with your guidance, late night phone calls, and hour long dinners helping preparing me for this journey and teaching me how to be a true titleholder.

To my Miss USA girls, we were apart of the class of 2010 for a reason. So many of you are now my sisters and best friends that I know I’ll have for the rest of my life. This was one place where we all were going after the same goal, lived the similar lives and had so many things in common. You all exceeded my expectations at Miss USA. It is an honor to be Miss USA’s 2010 Miss Congeniality.

To all of the beautiful contestants, I look up to you all for going after your dream. No matter the outcome continue to grow and show how great the women of Nebraska are. Thank you for being here and representing from across the state. You being here is the first step to your dreams and to making a difference. You are all winners no matter the outcome of tonight. And no matter what, don’t stop until you reach your dream.

To my successor. Get ready for the ride of your life. Cherish every moment and leave your legacy. Take in every second and make lots of memories! You have one year, and it goes by in a flash! I’m so excited for you to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity.

I told myself after I won that if my sash wasn’t covered in wear and tear from hugs, tears, makeup, travel, and more by the end of the year then I hadn’t done enough. Well, I can honestly say that I’ve done all I can, I’ve gotten more than I could have imagined out of this year. It’s time for me to take the next step, to move on to reach my other dreams. And with my experience as Miss Nebraska I know I am well prepared to make my dreams come true once again.

The Taste of Columbus

Sunday evening I traveled to Columbus, Nebraska to make an appearance at the "Taste of Columbus." All procedes were being donated 50/50 to the Paws and Claws, a non profit in Columbus, and the Columbus Chamber of Commerce.

There was a large crowd of 700-900 people from the Columbus community who came to support the city and Paws and Claws. The event consisted of tastings from Columbus eateries. My main duty was to help raise money for Paws and Claws. I sold raffle tickets, and I must say nearly every person bought a ticket in support of the cause!

I was also surprised with an autograph picture from "Fred," a youtube star from Columbus Nebraska. He wrote me an autograph picture, so of course I had to do one in return! Fred is now a junior in high school, has had millions of views of his youtube videos, and has contracted with Nickelodeon to make a movie and sitcom.

It was a pleasure to be invited by Columbus to attend one of their largest fundraising events. The food was amazing and the company even better! This was my last appearance as Miss Nebraska USA, in my sash anyways :-), so it was great to go out with a bang!

1. What encouraged you to try out for Miss Nebraska USA?
I had an internship in Kansas City and I met a former Miss Kansas and Miss Missouri and they both encouraged me to do Miss Nebraska USA. I was also continually mistaken for a former Miss Kansas while I was in Kansas City. This made me curious about the pageant. I looked up the details about competing for Miss Nebraska and what the job entailed and discovered that it was the perfect fit for me!

2. As they announced each placement (T.15, T.5 and the winner) what were you thinking as you were getting closer to becoming Miss Nebraska USA?
Each time I made the next round I became more and more excited that I had a real chance to represent the state of Nebraska for a year! I had worked so hard and realizing I could reach my dream was an amazing feeling!

3. What has been your most memorable moment yet as Miss Nebraska?
There are so many memorable moments I don’t know how I can choose just one! The most unforgettable moment was being chosen as Miss Congeniality at the Miss USA pageant. It was such an honor to be chosen by 50 of the most amazingly talented, smart and beautiful women in the United States who are now some of my very best friends.

4. What was your favorite part of competing at Miss USA and who was your roommate?
My favorite part were the different events that we did while were at Miss USA. This was a great way for us girls to get to bond with the other contestants. Whether it was the Ceasers Palace pool party or the Sushi Samba Karaoke we had a blast and were able to get to know each other before we got down to business with rehearsals. My roommate was Miss West Virgina and we were the perfect pair!

5. What was going through your head when you were announced as one of the finalists for Miss USA?
It was a whirlwind of emotion. I had to catch my breath and immediately couldn’t wipe the smile off of my face. It was such a huge accomplishment to move on to the next round of Miss USA and have a chance to be the next Miss USA.

6. During your reign, you got the opportunity to be one of the camp counselors for the Miss Teen USA Fantasy Camp what was that experience like?
This was one of my favorite experiences as Miss Nebraska USA! I was so honored to be chosen to be a camp counselor at the Miss Teen USA Fantasy Camp. It was great to work with the Miss Universe Organization, former Miss USA contestants and of course the campers! We had a blast and were able to watch the campers self esteem grown an enormous amount over one week! We helped them in all aspects of the pageant and the campers had a great time. It was exciting to go watch my teen compete at Miss Teen USA. I can’t really complain about beach time and being on Atlantis Paradise Island for a week, to sum up the experience in one word: Heaven!

7. What words of advice would you give to a girl who is going to compete in a pageant for the first time?
Look at the pageant as a chance to grow and enhance your strengths and weaknesses. Make friends along the way, because the girls you are competing with can teach you so much and may become your life long friends. And if you win, get ready for the ride of your life!

8. In a little over a month, you will give up your title as Miss Nebraska, what will you be doing once your reign is over?
I plan to graduate with my bachelors with a clothing and textile design and journalism degree in December and begin graduate school in the spring focusing on marketing, advertising and communication. After a finish graduate school I am excited to begin working in the entertainment and fashion industry in collaboration with journalism.

Race for a Cure

4:45AM my alarm went off, to my surprise I was up right away and was on the road heading to Omaha to volunteer with the 17th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. It was a chilly morning, but with all of the excitement in the air it didn't faze the 22,500 people from celebrating the day. But I still had 5 layers on to keep warm! That 22,500 crowd in Nebraska is the most Nebraska has ever had participating and making history!

The Nebraska Affilate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure raises funds to support the Komen Promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all the energizing science to find the cures. Susan G. Komen for the Cure was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at age 36. During the race you can walk, run or stroll to help end breast cancer forever.

It's breast cancer awareness month and this means women need to go get their exams and we need to raise awareness and find a cure. Get involved with their wide arrangement of events that you can find at their website: Susan G. Komen.

You may be asking why I didn't wear my sash? This was a day of survivors; meaning I was there to volunteer and did not want to take away any attention from the amazing women who have survived breast cancer. Those people are who made the event so special. Their stories are inspiring and ones to look up to.

The End is Near...

6:00AM wake up call is not usually how I like to start my weekends. But today I didn't mind because Amanda Soltero and I were heading to Kansas City to Vanbros and Associates to shoot the cover of the Miss Nebraska program book with Will Patterson, our official photographer. It was a sleepy ride, but we made it to Kansas City 3 hours later no problem!

We went straight to Pinkie Couture Hair Salon to get our hair done then decided on wardrobe and make up. The shoot went quick and we got some amazing shots! I'm excited to see the finished product! We also took our crown head-shots to go in the Miss Nebraska Hall of Fame...brings a tear to my eye, I can't believe how quickly this year has gone!

It was bittersweet leaving Vanbros for the last time. We had 3 bootcamps there, and Vanbros has become one of my families. It's also sad knowing that Amanda and I have 3 weeks left to represent Nebraska. It has been nothing short of an amazing year. But no worries, you will hear much more in my farewell speech that I'll be working on next week!

Hope Center for Kids Gala

Tonight I had the pleasure of attending the 3rd annual Hope Center for Kids Guild Expresssions of Hope 3rd Annual Gala at the downtown Hilton in Omaha, Nebraska. The event started at 6PM with hors d'oeuvres then the dinner and program at 7:30PM. There were around 800 people, marking the largest crowd and doubling the audience since last year's gala. This was amazing news for the Hope Center for Kids, meaning more donations and funding would come their way. It was an honor to be recognized along with the Governor, mayor of Omaha and many other influencial people in Nebraska.

The evening was a touching one. We heard testimonials from kids who have attended the Hope Center. Shocking facts that Nebraska has the highest millionaires were capita but also the highest rate of poverty in the African American community is not something Nebraska should be proud of. North Omaha is where a large majority of this poverty lies. And the Hope Center is there to help bring up the statistics and change the gangs, drug rates and high school drop outs. Out of kids that utilize the Hope Center, 80% of them attend college and 92% graduate high school. This blows other statistics of them in the same demographic out of the water!

The entire focus at the Hope Center is simple; it's purely "Hope." The mission of the Hope Center for Kids is to break the cycle of hopelessness for Omaha's inner-city youth by providing tangible hope through faith, education, employment and collaboration.

This is a program I am excited to get more involved with. Hearing the success stories that the Hope Center has made for inner- city kids going through countless struggles is truly inspiring. To sit back and not help is something none of us can do. No matter how small the task is, volunteering to give back not only helps our society but impacts lives.

I was asked to help out with a program, at the University of Nebraska Omaha, that helped young girls aged 5-10 years old with self confidence. The girls learned a dance with the UNO dance team and performed during half time of the UNO volleyball game. Along with Mrs. Nebraska and Miss Douglas County we helped the girls become more comfortable with public speaking. The girls had some fun showing us their talents, this ranged from a fun dance to singing or cheering.

The second day we had a tea party and then picked a girl that we thought had what it takes to be Little Miss Maverick. Emily won, but any of these girls could have been chosen. They grew an incredible amount. I really think this program helped with the girls' self esteem. They all left feeling more confident with themselves than when they came.

Monday Night Live

Tonight Amanda Soltero and I were asked to judge the University of Nebraska- Lincoln Homecoming skits. This took place at the Leid Center and it was packed to capacity of excited UNL students. Husker spirit filled the theater as we watched dances, skits and steps. The creativity put into these was amazing. We couldn't stop laughing. The winner did a knock off from the America's Got Talent show, check it out here. This group went last and I've never heard a louder applause! It was fun for Amanda and I to be apart of this experience. We are both UNL students, Amanda a freshman while I'm a senior anticipating graduation in December.

Rosenblatt Stadium is in its final month of professional baseball. I was asked as one of the 13 "Nebraska Celebrities" to help close down the historic stadium during its final month. I went to the stadium and threw out the first pitch. I was a little nervous to throw this pitch because it had been a good four years since I've thrown a softball or baseball. But to my surprise I made it to the plate!

Where things get real interesting is when the clouds change from a dark grey, to a yellow, and then to a weird dark red color. I had heard the rain was supposed to start around 7PM, but it was 8:30PM so I was thinking that the rain was holding off. And it was, until I went out to the outfield to take the mic and pull off the huge "3" to a "2" for the countdown. At that moment it started to down pour. And I don't mean a light rain; it started to come down in bucket fulls. I pulled off the big number "3" and said a few words and then we took off running. The bad thing was that there was hardly any coverage from the rain and we had to run all the way back around the diamond.

This was one of those memories that I will never forget. It was a lot of fun and made the night that much more interesting!

Popcorn Days

I visited my second hometown, North Loup, to help celebrate Popcorn Days. I gave a short speech at the 7PM talent show thanking everyone for their wonderful support. After that I took lots of pictures with everyone. Then it was off to ride rides at the carnival for the evening! On Sunday I judged the floats then rode along and threw out candy! The parade was a blast, but with Nebraska weather I've realized you get either rain, wind, heat or snow. And during the parade I got wind! My candy box flew off during the middle of the parade and my crown nearly flew off! Last time I was in a parade I got rained on, so it was only right I got wind this time! Nebraska has to keep things interesting!

Dancing With the Stars

I was honored to be invited to Youth Emergency Services' fundraising event-- Dance for a Chance. This fundraiser was held at the DC Centre on August 27th at 7:30PM. All profits from the event went to support the efforts to serve homeless youth who live with hunger and abuse issues on a daily basis. Dance for a Chance is a dance event similar to the television show, Dancing with the Stars.

Ten area stars who included: Kim Armstrong (Foundation Program Coordinator at Mutual of Omaha), Nick Bahe (former Creighton basketball star and host of 1620 the Zone's Schnick & Nick Show), Chad Carr (President of Ticket Express), Kristen Case-Penrod ( Chief Service Officer for the city of Omaha), Anne Hindery (CEO of Non-profit Association of the Midlands), Mary Nelson (KMTV's The Morning Blend), Bo Ruud (Former Husker football star), Adrian Whitsett (KETV news anchor), and me Belinda Wright (Miss Nebraska USA). We all had dance lessons from a professional dancer prior to performing for the fundraiser. After each star performs, judges will score the dancers and the audience has the opportunity to vote as well.

I had four practices prior to the competition and fell in love with Latin dancing. My partner and dance instructor, Zach, decided that the cha cha was the best suited dance to perform. It is one of the most challenging styles of Latin dance so I was instintly excited! We decided on a personal favotire song of mine: Black and White by Michael Jackson. If any of you know me, or watched my web interview from Miss USA you know that I am a MJ fanatic. This way, even if the dance went bad, the song would be awesome! Our dance featured 2 dips and dramatic lift for the ending. I was nervous I would have trouble remembering the complex routine, but come the night of the show I had it down!

I was happy with my scores receiving all 9s. Chad Carr ended up winning the even from online voting that knocked everyone else out of the water! But some of you may be wondering what is YES? YES stands for Youth Emergency Services. For over 35 year Youth Emergency Services has offered a safe place for young people in crisis. Last year along more than 160 homeless and at-risk teens spent at least one night in the Omaha shelter. The Youth Street Outreach Program helped 425 homeless and street dependent young people to find a safe place to stay, something to eat, and supplies to get though a time of crisis. YES workers also guided those who needed special help to the right places. YES also has a maternity group home and a transitional living program. Both programs assist homeless and at-risk youth as they transition to living independently in the community. Check out YES here.

The evening was completely successful and I was so happy my grandma and mom made the trip to the event. But the night wouldn't have been so special if it wasn't for the volunteering we did with YES. That Wednesday we went in and met the youth who were utilizing YES. We served them food and got to talk one on one with many. They opened up and I left feeling extremely inspired and thankful. YES is an organization that is helping change lives. So dancing in the event to fun YES was simply amazing.

Nebraska's Big Rodeo

Today my sister and I went to Nebraska's Big Rodeo in Burwell, Nebraska. I started the day by appearing in the parade at 10:00AM. Then had a meet and greet at the fair grounds at 12:00PM and then appeared in the Grand March at 1:00PM before the rodeo started.

The rodeo returned to Burwell as it did in 1921 when the town's first-ever rodeo began with a wild horse race. The facilities at Nebraska's Big Rodeo are one of the largest outdoor rodeo areas in the world. Events like clown acts, dinner bell derby, a mounted flag presentation and much more may be happening at the same time as regular events take place in the arena. Many visitors return just to see what they missed last time! The rodeo and fair are held each year on a sprawling 40 acres of grounds.

It was great to return to Burwell for the rodeo. I had been there about 4 years ago. It's a great summer activity for the entire family! The rodeo hits home to me because my mom and uncle used to participate in the horse show back in the day when they were in high school.

The rodeo attracts a larch crowd from all over Nebraska. The Calamus lake and recreation area are located in Burwell as well, so the town was packed! All of the hotels were filled in Burwell, as well as the surrounding towns. It was amazing to be able to talk to people from all over Nebraska. I was so humbled by the large amount of support I received from people who had watched the pageant and were cheering me on when I competed for Miss USA. That's the great thing about Nebraska; we have some of the best people living here!

Heritage Living Center

Today I visited the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul, Nebraska. I was able to visit with all of the residents and tell them my story. I visited with each one of them and got to know them a little better. It's always great to hear people's stories, and today I got to hear a wide array of life stories from about 30 ladies and gentlemen. The residents were from all over Nebraska, and some from out of the state. I left signing autographs, taking pictures and thanking them for wonderful hospitality! It was a great afternoon spent in Central Nebraska!

Miss Teen Fantasy Camp, Dolphins & Miss Teen USA 2010

We started the day at Dolphin Cay. All I can say is this was an amazing event that I will never forget! This was a shallow water dolphin interaction. We watched Echo do lots of tricks with the slight movement of the trainers hand and the sound of a whistle. Dolphins are amazing animals and quite amazing. I felt so blessed to be able to interact with them. We got to kiss them and give them high fives, along with watching them do lots of fun tricks!

After Dolphin Cay we got the rest of the day to explore Atlantis! Miss California, Nicole Johnson, and Miss Arkansas, Adrielle Churchill, and I went down the rapids and down all of the fun slides in Atlantis. We went to the beach and pool where we ran into Miss Virginia, Samantha Casey. After laying out and soaking up the sun we headed back to the hotel to shower and get ready for dinner and the final show for Miss Teen USA.

Miss Teen USA was amazing. We all watched in suspense. I was proud of Amanda, she did an amazing job! Miss Maryland pulled off the win; and it was really cool because her little sis was in the camp with us! It was great to see Victoria's reaction as she watched her sister get crowned Miss Teen USA.

After the pageant we headed for bed then woke up bright and early to say our goodbyes. This was hard and very sad because after a week of being with everyone we all became really close. With some tears and lots of hugs we bid farewell to everyone. Nicole had a late flight, like I did, so we decided to hit up the pool at the Cove one last time. It was great to spend the day with someone who I now consider an amazing friend.

Helping out with this camp was an amazing experience I can't begin to describe. Not only did I get to bond with USA title holders on a different level, but I got to meet and help the campers grown immensely throughout the week. It was amazing to watch the campers' self confidence shoot through the roof! Working with the Miss Universe Organization was another amazing experience. It made me even more proud to wear the Miss Nebraska USA sash.

Fantasy Camp Day 5 Miss Teen USA Prelims

Today we got to sleep in a little bit, so we started the day at 8:00AM. Next it was a fun-filled day that the campers had been looking forward too! The girls got to have their hair and make up done, then us camp counselors helped the girls pose for their photos. They had head shots taken, then a fun picture, an evening gown photo and a swimsuit photo on the beach. The girls had an absolute blast with this!

Then we had lunch at Mosaic in the Cove, which is a really fancy buffet. LeBron James was staying in the Cove, so we were all hoping to see him but didn't have any luck! After lunch we headed back to the Sun Suite and listened to Crystle Stewart's, Miss USA 2008, motivational speech.

After her speech we got ready for the Awards Presentation. During the week us camp counselors hand made sash's to fit each camper's personality. We had a Miss Runway Diva and a Miss Covergirl to name a few. This was such a fun presentation! The girls' had a blast, and us camp counselors were presented with engraved trophies for our work that week.

After the presentation of the awards, we headed to a private dinner that was beautifully set up. Miss USA 2010, Rima Fakih, ate with us. It was fun to be able to catch up with her!

Next it was off to the Miss Teen USA prelims. It was amazing to watch my little sis Amanda Soltero, Miss Teen Nebraska USA, rock the stage! She did an amazing job! After the prelims show it was off to bed, we had a long day and were ready for some shut eye!

Fantasy Camp Day 4 Sparty!

We started the day bright and early at 7:45am with another morning workout with Josh Rogers! The girls have made a tremendous amount of process in their fitness and had a blast working out this morning! But I have to admit, everyone is pretty wiped out today. We have been going nonstop since we got here! And it's been hard to sleep with anticipating the excitement for the next day!

After breakfast it was off to presentations and questions with the State Directors. After meeting with the state directors Paula Shugart and Tricia Langa from the Miss Universe Organization gave some extremely helpful interview tips to the campers. After receiving advice from the experts they had practice interviews with a panel of judges. Then it was off to lunch!

After lunch the girls met with Kent Parnham and Felicia the Miss Teen USA choreographers. They were able to learn the opening number dance that the Miss Teen USA contestants were performing. Then, one of the girls' favorite experiences, was watching the teen contestants rehearsal and then performing the dance and walking the runway in front of everyone. The campers' faces lit up and they had a blast while the counselors and Miss Teen USA contestants cheered them on!

Next up was a nutritional seminar with Josh Rogers, gown color blocking with La Casa Hermosa, runway training with LauRen Merola and us counselors! And then.....finally.....it was time for our Sparty, also known as "spa day", at Mandara Spa. This is exactly what we needed after four days of hard work. We each got an hour of service at the spa. And let me tell you, it was AMAZING! This spa was extremely luxurious and very relaxing.

Everyone had a evening at the spa and then it was off to the Fantasy Suite for the girls to get wardrobe assistance for the photo shoot the following morning. Then it was lights out for all!

Fantasy Camp Day 3 Welcome Reception

Day 3 started with a much more fun morning work out with Josh Rogers in the pool at Atlantis . After the workout came breakfast then met with Robin Fleming from La Casa Hermosa to discuss wardrobe selection. Then we had lunch with the Miss Teen USA contestants.

After lunch we met with Miss Universe President, Paula Shugart. Paula shared her story with us then left it open to questions. After talking with Paula the campers met with a swim expert then we all had free time. Next was dinner at Marketplace and the Welcome Reception for the Miss Teen USA contestants. This is where we all got to mingle with the contestants for this year's Miss Teen USA.

Last but not least, was Miss USA 2010 Rewind. This is where we showed the pageants and talked about the do's and don't from us titleholders. After watching Miss USA, the girls went on to Club Rush for some dancing and fun. Then it was PJs and Pillow talk in our bunny slippers and an impromptu talent show! It was fun to see everyone's wacky and crazy talents! After the show, it was time for bed!

Fantasy Camp Day 2 Project Sunshine

We started the day with a work out on the beach with Josh Rogers. Well, I should say that the campers worked out on the beach! I would have been willing to jump in and work out with the girls, but me and morning work outs don't always go over too well. I did get some great work out tips from Josh though!

After the work out it was off to breakfast then to our cheer competition. My group did a dance to "All the Pageant Ladies" I spin off of Beyonce's "All the Single Ladies." It was a great group building experience, plus a lot of fun!

Next was my personal favorite of the day: Project Sunshine. We made cards for terminally ill children; each card was different with each girl's personal touch. The cards we made will go to a hospital and given to each child. Project Sunshine is a nonprofit organization program to children and families living with medial challenges. It's a great program. You should definitely check it out!

Make up lessons

Next up on our busy day was hair and make up lessons. We had Linda Rondinella, the expert of make up, give lessons and Chi professionals, including Anna, who did my hair at Miss USA! She is amazing! The girls were very lucky to be able to work with Linda, who did all of the Miss Teen USA contestants' make up, and work with Chi professionals, who did our hair at Miss USA. After they learned the basics, us councilors helped the girls out.

To follow our make up lessons it was a Girl Talk with Stormi, Miss Teen USA. The girls got to ask her any questions they wanted and got to just chat with Stormi.

Then we had some free time! So I took my two girls to the pool and Sarah came with! It was amazing and definitely needed to relax by the pool. There are so many gorgeous pools all of Atlantis. After the pool we went to dinner at Market Place and then had the opportunity to explore one of the amazing aquariums.

After the aquarium we headed up to the sun suite and had a discussion on "What is a Titleholder." All counselors gave their definitions and experiences and the campers asked lots of good questions that led us into about what we all thought a titleholder is about and the responsibilities that come with the job. It was a great conversation and I feel everyone benefited from it!

Miss Teen USA Fantasy Camp

This year, along with other Miss USA title holders, I was a camp counselor helping girls prepare for pageants while having a blast in the Bahamas! Open to ages 12 through 17. This was 7 days and 6 nights at the Atlantis Resort working with Miss Universe Organization partners and staff.

Sara Brooks and I met in the Atlanta airport, and got to arrive to the Bahamas together. We got situated in our rooms and then that night we had dinner at Nobu, an AMAZING sushi restaurant in Atlantis. We got to meet the staff we'd be working with that night, then it was off to rest up for the next day!

Adrielle, Miss Arkansas USA, and I started our Monday by exploring Atlantis Paradise Island, and let me tell you, I now understand why they call this Paradise Island. We hit the beach and went through the aquariums and just relaxed before starting the camp at 3:00PM.

Then at 3:00, we went down to the Coral Lounge and met the rest of the camp couselors and the campers! This year Alicia Blanco, Miss Arizona 2009, Laura Chukanov, Miss Utah 2009, Nicole Johnson, Miss California, Adrielle Churchill, Miss Arkansas 2010, and Sara Brooks, Miss Louisiana 2010, along with myself were chosen as camp counselors for the Miss Teen USA Fantasy Camp.

After we got everyone together, we changed and went to the Bridge Suite for introductions and orientation. The Bridge Suite is amazingly gorgeous. It overlooks all of Atlantis and costs about $25,000 a night, minimum night stay of 7 nights. This is where Michael Jackson stayed. It had a breathtaking view! We did introductions orientation then went to dinner at the Market Place and then it was off to bed!

It was a great first day, and we had lots of jam packed fun for the remainder of the week! MTV Made was also following us around the entire week. One of our campers was being Made into a beauty queen. Be sure to check out the episode in a couple months!

Tonight was an amazing evening at Ironwood Golf Course in Omaha, Nebraska. I teamed up with former Nebraska quarterback Joe Ganz, Fire Captain Darren Garrean, Nebraska native Elizabeth Kitt who was on the Bachelor, Misty Janssen MD Practitioner with Alegant Health, Ryan McPike Chief Meteorologist for MNTV Action 3 News and local personalities Big Party and Jeff Degan of Channel 94.1 to auction off date packages to raise money for ALS in the Heartland.

Sizzle Under the Stars is Omaha's hottest new event of the summer. The Cox Classic teamed up with ALS in the Heartland to host this benefit featuring Omaha's only celebrity charity auction. I auctioned of donations from Kimberly Spa, for a spa experience, a golf outing at Tiburon Golf Course, and a wine tasting and bread basket for two at James Arthur Vineyard. My package was sold to Metro Magazine, whom I've had the honor to work with for the July cover.

Besides the fact that it was EXTREMELY hot and humid (but that's Nebraska weather for you :-) it was a great evening and the best part is that we were able to raise money for ALS patients and families! Following the auction, the local band Secret Weapon performed and fireworks were shot off. A great ending to the evening!

Farm Safety

Sunday evening I traveled across the state to Imperial, Ne to give a speech Monday morning to the Chase County's Progressive Agriculture Farm Safety Day. It was five hour drive, so I made sure to have the essentials: bag, gps, snacks, new songs on the Ipod, a full tank of gas, and of course my sash and crown! It was a nice drive and I got to see the other side of Nebraska, and even changed time zones! It was a great drive, minus the hail storm and sudden monsoon that I encountered half way through the drive; but that's Nebraska weather for ya!

I spent the night at the Imperial Inn, and got up the next morning to head to the fair grounds. I spoke of my experience with farm safety and told my story to approximately 150 kids and adults. I got asked lots of fun questions and then it was time for the campers to rotate to their next station for a full day of safety learning. "O" Fest

Today I helped announce bands at the 2nd Annual "O" Fest in Omaha, NE at the Shops of Legacy Village and Amphitheater. This unique community celebration was a showcase of Omaha area restaurants and food companies with exciting live entertainment and activities. There was something for everyone in the family to enjoy throughout the festival!

They had a great crowd, and before I announced I met up with Geneice Wilcher, Miss Nebraska USA 2007, for dinner. Then we both enjoyed the "O" Fest after I announced the rock band: Pink Cadalliac. I got to mingle and chat with a lot of great people who came out to enjoy the celebration. It's pretty funny, because everyone thinks Geneice and I are sisters, which we are, just not technically! That's been part of my favorite experience with Miss Nebraska: the sisterhood.

Thanking the Vets

It was a rewarding day to say the least. With the our country's Independence Day right around the corner I was in the right place that was full of pride! I was honored to visit Veterans from World War II and many others who have helped defend our freedom at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island, Nebraska today. I made sure to tell every person I visited with how I appreciated what they have done for our country and that I'm not the only one who does.

Everyone was so kind and thankful that we remember them and appreciate all they have done for our country. I went around and shook hands, took pictures, signed autograph cards and gave everyone a little 4th of July bear. It was great to hear all of the stories these men and women have.

Visiting with the Veterans was very special to me, because I would not be hear if it wasn't for the military! My mom and dad met in the military and are both Veterans. My grandfather is also a Veteran and goes to the VA in Grand Island, as did my dad.

It was a memorable experience at the VA in Grand Island that truly touched my heart. Not only did they welcome me with gorgeous red roses, but I was overwhelmed with compliments and thank yous, when I was honored to be meeting and thanking them! Tommy Vasser of Omaha, a Navy veteran, write a wonderful poem. That was the first poem anyone had ever wrote for me; let alone about me! He was so kind to read and give the poem to me.

Veterans are often times forgotten about, especially when we have men and women fighting over seas right now. But we wouldn't be here today, and have the freedoms we do, if it wasn't for Veterans. If you can, I ask you all to reach out to Veterans and let them know how much you truly appreciate all they have been through.

NE State Capital

Today I ventured to the Nebraska State capital to visit with Senator Kate Sullivan. I had met Senator Sullivan at the Valley County Health Gala we both attended in January at the start of this year. It was very interesting because she also attended the University of Nebraska- Lincoln and also majored in clothing and textile design. So we hit it off instantly!

Senator Kate Sullivan handles District 41, which contains a lot of small towns in Nebraska including my home town. During our visit we discussed the terrible floods that occurred in Central Nebraska this year due to heavy rain fall and the dams breaking and flooding several towns. Luckily it looks as though grants will be sent to those in need in a matter of time. She did, however, ask me to spread the word that if you have had flood damage due to these instances, save your receipts in hopes to be re-compensated in the near future.

We also discussed my platform, "The Importance of Education" and how I can reach out to the state of Nebraska. She was a huge help and gave me a lot of great ideas! It was great getting to know her better and work together on various ideas for the future.

It was great to be asked back on the Omaha Morning Blend at CBS. The first time I was on I was promoting and talking about my preparations for Miss USA. Today I was welcomed back and talked about my experience at Miss USA and what I was up to this summer. We discussed my upcoming events like ALS in the Heartland Sizzle Under the Stars on July 17th where I will auction off a date package to raise money for ALS patients. Mary and I joked about competing against each other in Youth Emergency Services Dance for a Chance 2010, where Mary and I will be local celebrities dancing to raise money for the Youth Emergency Services in August.

Matt McKay Mornings

Last night Amanda Soltero, Miss Nebraska Teen USA, came over and stayed the night. We got to catch up and have some true girl time. Before we knew it, we were up bright and early in the morning, 6AM to be exact, and getting ready for Matt McKay Mornings on 106.3 KFRX in Lincoln.

We had previously met Matt McKay at a Stars Hockey game we went to earlier this year. If you've ever listened to his show, you know he is spunky and so much fun! It was great to be in the studio. We were promoting Miss Teen USA where Amanda will be competing in the Bahamas. The webcast will be aired at missteenusa.com and seventeen.com on July 24th. Amanda will go to compete for Miss Teen USA July 19th-24th. You can go onto missteenusa.com and rate her 5 stars!

While on Matt McKay Mornings we talked to Lindsey and Matt about how we got involved in pageants and how we have stayed humble throughout the entire experience. It was such a fun show and we can't wait to go back on soon!

Metro Magazine Cover Photo-Shoot

It was noon, and I was at Laurie and Charles Photograph Studio in downtown Omaha. Be sure to check out their website, they are a great team and produce gorgeous pictures. Today we were shooting the cover for Metro Magazine for the July issue promoting Sizzle Under the Stars for the 2010 ALS Bachelor & Bachelorette Charity Auction.

We had a great team working on the cover. Eric Burden from Bungalow/eight did my hair and Kelly Haley, a Pro Makeup Artist from Sephora did my makeup. We had a blast getting ready for this photoshoot. I wore a fabulous 50's style gold swimsuit with a flag backdrop. I had bright red lips and some crazy hair. I can't wait to see how the cover of this magazine turns out. And hopefully it brings more attention to ALS in the Heartland and this great event to bring more money to ALS patients!

ALS in the Heartland Golf Classic

I had a blast helping out at the ALS in the Heartland Golf Classic at the Tiburon Golf Club in Omaha.

But now on to the important stuff! Please take the time to read on and learn about this disease and organization, once you have I promise it will touch your heart. You may be wondering what ALS is? ALS is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease, is an insidious disease that strikes the nerves we need to manipulate the muscles we use daily. Roughly 30,000 people nationwide have ALZ, more than 5,000 are diagnosed each year. Almost 2 times more men than women, and 1.5 times more military service members than the general population are affected by ALS.

Symptoms can range from muscle twitching, to difficulties in walking and holding items, to slurred speech and poor breathing. It affects the major muscle groups: legs, arms, diaphram and the bulbar region (speaking, chewing and swallowing). ALS does not affect our sense of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch; it generally does not affect the intellect, bladder and bowel functions, or sexual functions.

The age of people diagnosed can range from 20's through the 70's and 80's. The average lifespan from the date of diagnosis is 2-5 years. Most cases are sporadic. This is a lengthy and challenging disease that not only affects the individual diagnosed, but also the entire family and circle of friends.

ALS in the Heartland is a nonprofit organization that needs awareness in Nebraska. This organization serves patients, caregivers and families. They aim to enhance the quality of life of all people affected by ALS. ALS help to heighten community awareness of this devestating disesase, and to strengthen public and legislative support in the fight against ALS. Their services include in-home consultants, support groups, community resources and referrals, an equipment program and a respite care voucher program.

There is no known prevention measure, and no known cure at this time or definitive explanation of the cause. This means ALS can affect any of us. That is what makes this organization so special. Scotia Homecoming

It was an amazing feeling to be back in my hometown where I attended school since kindergarden. I came back to not only be with friends and family, but to celebrate our great town Scotia! I was honored to be apart of our Scotia Homecoming parade as the Grand Marshal. The parade was fun, rain and all. Yes, I said rain. Well more like a sudden downpour right in the middle of the parade! I laughed my way through it, and by the end I was drenched! This was a memory I will never forget! My first parade of the summer, and good ole Nebraska weather decides to shower us with lots of rain. :-)

Then it was off to the canopy for a meet and greet. I was able to sign lots of autographs and talk to a great number of people I hadn't seen in a very long time. This was extremely special to me, because I have received an overwhelming amount of support from Scotia. Every single person has been so gracious with all kinds of acts of kindness. I'll always be a Scotia girl!

Miss USA 2010

We packed our bags, in hopes that we would be the one girl to be moved to the Planet Hollywood suite later that night, and fly our to NYC the very next morning. This was bitter sweet. The Miss Universe Staff, our chaperons, and the Miss USA class of 2010 class had become one big family! Being together for 2 and a half weeks brought us all so close. It was sad to think of us spreading across the U.S. after tonight.

Finals day morning came quickly. We headed straight to dress rehearsal then had 3 hours to get ready for the world wide televised show on NBC. A hairspray fog filled the backstage area and make up products were everywhere. Girls were quietly getting ready for the big show. The top 15 had already been chosen. It was all out of our hands now.

Before I knew it, I heard the pre-taped introductions going, and that meant one thing, the show had started! Next it was time for my dance group and I to open the show. Tik Tok came on and we rocked it out! Dancing in front of millions of people on network TV is something I will never forget.

After the dance, we "patiently" awaited for Natalie and Curtis to announce the top 15. I thought it wasn't in my cards, till I heard NEBRASKA called! I can't explain the joy that came over me as walked to place and couldn't stop smiling.

Next we were backstage. Lou was prepping us for our swimsuit walks. We were so excited and nervous all at the same time! The Boys Like Girls started to play Heartbreak and it was about time for us to take the stage.

Swimsuit went great and I am so blessed to have made it that far. But making it in the top 10 was not in my cards. I went backstage and changed into evening gown and then went out to perform the evening gown dance. Then backstage again to cheer on the remaining girls.

As we went back on stage. Two girls received special awards: Miss Photogenic (voted by the online voters) and Miss Congeniality (voted by the contestants). Miss Congeniality reflects the respect and admiration of the delegate's peers who voted for her as the most congenial, charismatic and inspirational participant. To my great surprise, I heard, "And Miss Congeniality goes to.....Nebraska!!" I was shocked, honored, and thankful. This meant the absolute world to me. I took my place on stage, with my eyes full of tears. I had made friends to last a lifetime. I will always be forever thankful.

The show went quick from then on out. Rima Fakih, Miss Michigan, was named the new Miss USA 2010. I was so happy for her! Then it was off to see my family and friends who had made the trip out to support me! I can't thank each and every person enough for this amazing opportunity to represent the state of Nebraska at Miss USA. Although I didn't win, I am happy to leave my legacy as the first Miss Nebraska to ever win Miss Congeniality and the first Miss Nebraska in 30 years to make the top 15!

He prepped us for the competition. Since Donald Trump owns the Miss Universe organization, it was very exciting to get to meet someone I had heard so much about!

May 13th through May 15th we rehearsed for 12 hours a day! It was exhausting to say the least, but we had to make sure everyone had every step of the final, televised show down. It was fun to be able to get to know the girls and staff better while we were on breaks and waiting to go on stage.

Miss USA Preliminaries!

Tuesday evening I arrived back in Vegas, accompanied by my mom and sister. When I arrived I immediately had the night off! This was our one and only night off during the entire competition to be with our families. So my family and I went out to eat and walked the strip and got some good relaxation in.

The next morning I was up bright and early for my interview. Five other girls volunteered to do interviews with me, since i was gone the day everyone did the interviews. This is my favorite part of competition because we get to show the judges our true personalities. They went great!

Right after interviews we were thrown into dress rehearsals. I had to learn the walk and schedule that day. It was stressful playing catch up for the days I had been gone, but luckily I got everything down and excitedly got ready for prelims!

The night went great! It was fun to be able to finally hit the stage after weeks, I mean MONTHS of practicing and preparing! It was a special evening because we all wore pins on our sashes in honor of my dad.

A Special Thank You

A wanted to take a moment to thank everyone so much for all of the thoughts and prayers sent my way during the difficult situation I was placed in. May 7th, I received the horrific news that my father had been killed in a farming accident. Words cannot express the pain I was immediately struck by. I was fortunate enough to have the support from the Miss Universe Organization, who sent me on an immediate flight home to be with my family.

I can't thank everyone enough for the tremendous amount of support and encouragement that gave me the spirit to fly back to Las Vegas and continue to compete for Miss USA in honor of my dad.

Every card, text, phone call, email, and facebook post truly touched my heart. Every pray was felt, not only by me, but also my family, friends, and new sisters I made at Miss USA. Along with my new guardian angel, it gave me the strength to go on to compete for my dream of becoming Miss USA.

I hope my story can help others going through difficult times. It's not easy, but being surrounded by love helps everything.

My dad, Harry Wright, lives on through my mom, Cyrstal Wright, my brother, Maceo Wright, my sister, Amber Wright, and myself. I would love to explain his amazing and inspirational life story, but my words cannot do him justice.

Rockin the Runway

6AM came way to early, but I rolled out of bed and headed down for another morning work out. I was sore from the day before, and today's workout was much harder! Our trainer worked us hard! E! Entertainment was their filming, so I had to fight my way through the pain!

After breakfast we were in rehearsals all day. I was picked with 5 other girls to be apart of the "A" group. We were all former dancers, so it was fun to work with them on our challenging opening number routine! We nailed the opening number dance and then worked with Lou, runway diva extraordinaire. This woman is amazing! She is a former super model who modeled for over 20 years and now works with Elite Model Management. She is one of the original hot runway girls. Her famous quote is: "There are only 2 people in the world, those who want to be me, and those who want to marry me. Which one are you?"

Then it was time to get ready for Rock the Runway Fashion Show at the Fashion Show mall. This was a blast to finally get on stage and walk the runway. We all wore shirts sponsored by Forever 21.

Then it was off to dinner at Bucca di Peppo. We got to cook with the chef and eat amazing pasta and a huge brownie dessert!

Weird and Wacky, Swimsuit Poster & The Price Is Right

We started the day at 4:30AM with our swimsuit poster photo shoot. We had to be down at the pool, with full hair and make up at 6:00Am. It was FREEZING! And it was freezing with our robes on, then we had to strip down and take our poster swimsuit picture. This was an experience I'll never forget ha!

After freezing our tushes off, we headed to the conference room to get our blood pumping with a great work out. I loved this, being the work out nut I am, it was a great way to start the morning. Then it was off to the Spice Market for breakfast!

After breakfast I headed back to my room to get ready for the "Weird and Wacky" video shoot. Along with other girls, I was chosen to participate in this video. We displayed our wide variety of talents and hobbies in a fun video! Check it out by clicking here --> Weird and Wacky Video. This was a great way for viewers to get to know us a little better!

There is so much more to us girls than meets the eye! I was displaying my long jump skills, I hold my high school record in long jump, and went to state 3 years to compete in long jump in high school. Other girls played volleyball, basketball, sang, played guitar and other musical instruments, were winners of a watermelon and pizza eating contests, danced, learned how to ride a bike and much more!

The Weird and Wacky Crew!

This video shoot was so much fun! We felt like we were apart of a circus ha! But it was FREEZING! I know that sounds crazy, since it was May and we were in Las Vegas. But it was so cold! Luckily we got through the shoot quick and had a great time! While we were shooting out video, other girls were at the Citi Center Walking Tour and Lunch, The Cupcake Factory, and the Project Sunshine.

After the shoot, it was time to get ready for the Price is Right. This was a really fun event, but I have to admit, we were all so tired!

Caesars Palace Pool Party & Sushi Samba/Karaoke

What do you know, another early morning! We started the day with orientation from Paula Shugart, President of the Miss Universe Organization.

After that we headed to Caesars Palace for lunch and a pool party. This didn't seem like work at all! we laid out, waded in the pool, ate, and socialized.

Then it was back to Planet Hollywood to get ready for Sushi Samba and Karaoke. This was my favorite event! Sushi is one of my all time favorite foods, and to my surprise I became addicted to karaoke!

We sang just about every fun girly song there is! Spice Girls, Pussycat Dolls, and Britney Spears had nothing on us! We danced to the cha cha slide and had a blast! I was sweaty by the end of the night from all of the dancing and singing.

This was the best way to get close with all of the girls. We were able to let loose and have fun with each other in a different setting. After the event, we were back on the buses, back to the hotel, and back to bed!
